Toroid RUDRA, A 100km Range Electric Bicycle, Features and Price

TOROID RUDRA: Rudra is an all-new electric bicycle introduced by Toroid Technologies. After the success of its predecessor, the company is back with a new model called “Rudra”. The main highlighted feature of the bike is it gives you a 100km of riding range on a single charge. But do we really get a 100km range? Let’s find it out.

Design And Build Quality:

Unlike previous models, this model comes with a new frame design and color combination. It’s an aerodynamic frame that has ergonomically designed. The matt black and red color combination truly eye-catching and never go unnoticed. To give the bike a solid and robust build quality, the 16″ frame is made of alloy steel. This is the same material used in making cars and motorcycles and it is not only strong but durable too. But it’s a bit heavy. The bike weighs 25kg with a carrying capacity of up to 120kg.

Motor And Its Torque:

Rudra runs on a 250w BLDC rear hub motor and it’s 36v motor that generates up to 36nm torque. As per government norms, the top speed of the bike is 25kmph but with the help of pedal assist you can achieve up to 45kmph of speed.

Battery And Its Range:

The motor is powered by a massive 20Ah of portable Lithium-ion battery pack. There are two more battery options to choose from- 7.5Ah and 12.5Ah. The battery pack is made in India and it houses 800 to 1000 charging cycles. Once the lifecycles get over then the replacement cost of the battery will be as follow:

Battery Replacement Cost For Each Ah:

  • 7.5Ah Battery: ₹9000
  • 12.5Ah Battery: ₹14000
  • 20Ah Battery: ₹17000

For charging, you will get a 5Amp charger with the 20Ah battery and that takes 3 – 4 hours to charge. Whereas with the 7.5ah and 12.5ah variants, the company will provide a 2Amp standard charger and that takes 3 hours to charge fully. Once the battery gets charged then per charge as per battery capacity, the bike is able to go up to

  • 25-30km on Throttle Mode (with 7.5Ah Battery)
  • 45-50km on PAS Mode (with 7.5Ah Battery)
  • 40-45km on Throttle Mode (with 12.5Ah Battery)
  • 60-70km on PAS Mode (with 12.5Ah Battery)
  • 60-70km on Throttle Mode (with 20Ah Battery)
  • 90-100km on PAS Mode (with 20Ah Battery)

Please note, actual range may vary for every individual due to body weight, road condition and the acceleration.

Riding Mode:

Rudra has only two riding modes- Throttle mode and Assist mode. But sadly there is no assist levels in the bike. It’s a single level assist system that has dual PAS sensor.

Wheels And Suspension:

Rudra has 26″ wheels combined with double-walled alloy rims. There are 2.35″ MTB tires by Generic that perform well on most terrains. Well for a smoother riding experience, it comes with an 80mm front fork suspension. The bike also has a seat post-spring to absorb the rear jerks, but sadly it doesn’t perform well as claimed.

Gears And Brakes:

Rudra is a single-speed geared electric bicycle and comes with 160mm made in India dual mechanical disc brakes by Sprandom that also have an auto safety cut-off feature. That means when applying the brakes, it cuts off the motor from surging ahead.

Additional Features:

Additionally, the bike sports a horn, a pair of mudguards, a headlight. Apart from this the bike also has an ignition key to start the bike. So without permission, no one can access your bike in your absence. The company is also providing bike insurance that covers theft and accidental damage protection with an extra charge. 1-year warranty on all mechanical and electric components.

Price:

Based on battery variants, as on 4th Dec 2020 the price is listed bellow

  • 7.5Ah Model: ₹30000
  • 12.5Ah Model: ₹35000
  • 20Ah Model: ₹42000

Verdict:

The overall performance of the bike is good and its 20ah massive battery is capable of giving up to 100km range. But you have to compromise with a few things like the bike is quite heavy and it feels when you ride the bike manually. So build quality could be improved for reducing the weight. Other than this it has only a single-level pedal assist, which means motor assistance is limited to only a single level and can not be extended further. Multi-speed gears should also be there on the bike for a prominent riding experience and moreover, the company is proving only 1 year of warranty on the bike that hard to accept for a 40k bike. So if you can compromise with these features and if you want a bike that gives you up to 100km of range then only you can consider this bike.
